Cool mornings. Cypress sloughs. Ducks working the timber on north Lake Sam Rayburn. That is fall in Deep East Texas — and Bigfoot Kingtown RV Park sits right in the middle of it.
If you have been waiting for the right weekend to load the decoys, book the camper, and head for the piney woods, this is it. Fall weather around Nacogdoches and the Angelina River is some of the best of the year: crisp mornings, comfortable afternoons, and evenings made for a campfire after a morning on the water.
Duck Hunting Near Lake Sam Rayburn and the Angelina River
Bigfoot Kingtown RV Park sits at 3403 County Road 552 in Nacogdoches County, at the Kingtown boat ramp on the Angelina River and the north end of Lake Sam Rayburn. That location is the point. You can launch a boat a short walk from your site, work flooded timber and creek arms, and be back at camp before lunch.
East Texas duck hunting is timber and backwater hunting more than open-lake hunting. Mallards, wood ducks, gadwall, and teal use the sloughs, creek mouths, and flooded bottoms around Sam Rayburn. Public hunting is available on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land around the reservoir (check current maps and county regulations). Many hunters also lease private ground or book a local guide.
2026–27 Texas duck season (North Zone, which includes Nacogdoches County):
- Youth and Veterans/Active Duty: November 7–8, 2026
- Regular season first split: November 14–29, 2026
- Regular season second split: December 5, 2026 – January 31, 2027
Always confirm dates, bag limits, and shooting hours with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department before you hunt. You will need a Texas hunting license, Migratory Game Bird endorsement, HIP certification, and a federal duck stamp if you are 16 or older. Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.
We are a place to stay and launch — not a commercial hunting outfitter. Bring your own gear, know the rules, and treat neighboring landowners and other hunters the way you want to be treated.
Why Fall Weather in Deep East Texas Is Worth the Drive
Summer heat breaks. The woods smell like pine and damp leaves. Mornings on the river are cool enough for a jacket and still mild enough that you are not fighting ice in the decoy bags. Afternoons are made for a nap at camp, a drive into Nacogdoches, or a second look at the water.
That combination — waterfowl season plus comfortable camping weather — is why fall is one of the best times of year to book an RV site on north Lake Sam Rayburn. You can hunt at first light, fish later in the day, and still have time to walk the riverbank or tell a Bigfoot story around the fire.
Stay Close to the Oldest City in Texas
Nacogdoches calls itself the oldest town in Texas — a claim rooted in Caddo settlement, the Spanish mission era, and the 1779 founding by Antonio Gil Y’Barbo. Downtown is packed with history: the Old Stone Fort Museum, Sterne-Hoya House, Durst-Taylor Historic House, and a National Register historic district.
The park is a short drive from town. That means you can hunt or fish at daylight, then spend an afternoon on Banita Creek, grab a meal downtown, and still sleep next to the river. Stephen F. Austin State University, local shops, and East Texas pine forest are all nearby.
What You Get at Bigfoot Kingtown RV Park
- Spacious pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp)

- Kingtown boat ramp about 100 feet from the park
- Pet-friendly stay (see park rules)
- Quiet hours and a clean, well-kept campground

After a wet morning in the timber, it is a short walk back to heat, a shower, and a place to hang waders. That is the whole point of camping next to the launch.
Plan Your Fall Hunt-and-Camp Trip
- Check TPWD for current duck season dates, zone maps, and bag limits.
- Book an RV site at Bigfoot Kingtown RV Park before peak weekends fill.
- Pack layers. Fall mornings on the river are cool; afternoons warm up fast.
- Bring your boat or kayak — the ramp is at the park.
- Leave time for Nacogdoches. The oldest city in Texas is 20 minutes away and worth the drive.
Deep East Texas does not stay this pleasant forever. Duck season opens, the woods turn, and the river is right outside the site. Come hunt. Come camp. Come see why people keep coming back to Kingtown.
